Maryam Nawaz launches first-ever E-Taxi Scheme to promote E-Mobility
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has officially launched an e-taxi scheme in the province, describing it as a major step toward establishing a comprehensive “e-mobility ecosystem.” The initiative aims to promote environmentally friendly transport while creating new employment opportunities across Punjab.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the chief minister announced that approximately 1,100 electric taxis will be introduced under the scheme at subsidized rates. Notably, 30 per cent of the quota has been reserved for women, making inclusivity a central feature of the programmed. She highlighted that Punjab is the first province in the country to roll out such a scheme, calling it a milestone for both sustainable development and job creation.
CM Maryam Nawaz said the e-taxi project aligns with the provincial government’s broader green transport vision. She pointed to existing green bus services as an example and revealed plans to expand environmentally friendly public transport to all 148 tehsils of Punjab in the coming phase.
Detailing the financial support, the chief minister stated that the government is providing subsidies of up to Rs4 billion for the 1,100 electric vehicles. To ease access for drivers, the Punjab government will cover 15 per cent of the required 30 per cent down payment. As a result, beneficiaries can take delivery of an e-taxi by paying Rs690,000 upfront.
For women applicants, the support is even greater, with the government bearing 60 per cent of the down payment cost. CM Maryam Nawaz also announced that the newly launched pink and green e-taxis would begin operating on the roads of Lahore and other districts within the next 48 hours, marking a visible shift toward cleaner and smarter urban mobility.
