Customs Seize Usable Batteries Smuggled as Scrap in Major Bust
In a major crackdown, Pakistan Customs Enforcement has foiled an attempt to smuggle usable batteries disguised as scrap. The illegal consignment, cleared through the Karachi International Container Terminal (KICT), was imported by a company that had falsely declared eight containers as scrap batteries.
Acting on intelligence, Customs officials, led by Deputy Collector Syed Muhammad Raza Naqvi, monitored battery scrap shipments at KICT. On November 24, they intercepted the consignment cleared by Century Engineering Private Limited. During the inspection, Customs officials uncovered discrepancies in the documentation, which falsely described the contents as scrap. Further investigation revealed that one of the containers had been rerouted to a warehouse at Northern Bypass.
Upon examination, it was found that instead of scrap, the containers contained 6,748 usable batteries valued at Rs134.9 million, far exceeding the declared value of Rs4 million. The smuggling attempt violated Pakistan’s strict import policy, which bans the import of used batteries.
Customs has initiated legal action against the clearing agent and Century Engineering and transferred the seized batteries to a Customs warehouse for further processing.
